Visual Side Effects after Laser Vision Correction Procedures: Halos, Double Vision, Loss of Contrast, Glare
Part 1 | Part 2
This section shows images illustrating the terms halos, double
vision (ghosting), loss of contrast sensitivity (foggy vision), starburst and glare. You will get an idea of the impact that laser vision correction procedures like IntraLASIK, LASIK, Epi-LASIK, LASEK, PRK can have on your eyesight, even though the visual acuity is considered to be normal and the operation to be successful. Please note that the impact of these effects can differ in degree. Also, they can occur in combination with each other. Image section II contains pictures illustrating these side effects.
| Ghosting (Double Vision)
The row of letters above the red line corresponds to visual acuity of 100%.

[1] |
| This picture illustrates the vision of a normal-sighted person or of an ametropic person with an optimal correction of the visual acuity (e.g. by means of glasses, contact lenses, etc.). |
The letters above the 100% line shown in this picture can still be recognized despite irritating double
vision (ghosting). If this is your vision after laser vision correction procedures (IntraLASIK, LASIK, Epi-LASIK, LASEK, PRK ), the operation will still be considered successful. |

| Loss of Contrast Sensitivity (Foggy Vision) |

[1] |

[1] |
| This picture illustrates your vision in a traffic situation if you don't suffer from possible visual side effects of laser vision correction procedures |
This picture shows a loss of contrast sensitivity (foggy vision) in combination with a minor loss of visual acuity. Loss of contrast sensitivity is a disturbing visual side effect of laser vision correction procedures like IntraLASIK, LASIK, Epi-LASIK, LASEK, PRK . |
|
| Halos (Haloes) |

[1]
|

[1]
|
| This picture shows a typical traffic scene at night with little traffic, thus little light effects (mesopic vision). |
Halos and double
vision (ghosting) have a significant impact on the ability to drive. These effects can't be corrected by glasses. Road signs (one-way street) are more difficult to perceive. |
|
| Starburst |
|

[1]
|
|
The starburst effect is mainly observed after RK incisions, but it also occurs after other laser vision correction procedures. |
|
| Glare |

[1]
|

[1]
|
|
The glare effect means irritating, above-average light effects caused by all kinds of reflective material. |
