Is that true?
Portland, Ore., researchers have said contact lens users are more likely than Lasik surgery patients to develop complications leading to further vision loss.
Ophthalmologist William Mathers and colleagues at Oregon Health and Science University's Casey Eye Institute said a review of multiple studies revealed that contact lens wearers face a 1- in-100 risk of developing a serious lens-related eye infection over 30 years of use and a 1-in-2,000 chance of experiencing dramatic loss of vision loss as a result, WebMD reported Wednesday.
The researchers said in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology that the chances of Lasik surgery leading to significant vision loss is about 1-in-10,000.
"One shouldn't just assume that contacts are safer," Mathers said. "This may have been true at one time but for the average person this is certainly not the case anymore."
"Almost everyone who wears contact lenses violates some principle of proper use at some point," he said. "Either they don't wash their hands before putting them in or they use tap water (to store the lenses). But infections can occur even when this doesn't happen."

Serious permanent complications are very rare with contacts if you exercise proper care, the vast majority with problems do everything wrong! I know someone that leaves his contacts in till his eyes really hurt then he takes them out, waits for the pain to go away then pops in another pair. Hes gone for a few months without taking em out! Hes getting lasik soon and doesnt care about the risks, just wants to get done with it and never worry about his eyes again.
I guess lasik might be the less risky option than contacts in *his* case. But for most people, contacts are a far better and safer option and theres always glasses! _________________ LASIK benefits, risks and complications

Agree with Ron.
I'm not talking about quality of life. Glasses are the safest. The man in Ron's case is an exception. Lazy people may use dailies or even monthlies. Very dirty people may get infections but this is not permanent. There are very good spheric and toric lenses nowadays with gas permeable properties.
A sensible approach to wear contacts is important. Neovascularization is one complication( additional blood vessels due to lack of oxygen in the eye). GPC or giant papillary conjunctivitis is another side effect but the worst case is scarring on the conjunctiva and permanent intolerance of the contacts.
Eyedrops like olopatidine can relief symptoms while continue using contacts for about 7 hours daily. My ophthalmologist suggested it but I do prefer glasses for 3 months without medication. My eye became dry after so long CL weating.I don't use natural tears but blink a bit more often to moisturize my eyes. Additional vision training. Now I have no problems and managed without any drops _________________ I know nothing but would like to know everything |
